You can be excused if you woke up Wednesday morning, rubbed your eyes and concluded you were part of the movie "Groundhog Day."

When you awoke Tuesday - Election Day - there was a Democratic president, a Democratic Senate and a Republican House of Representatives. The next day (allegedly Wednesday), there was a Democratic president, a Democratic Senate and a Republican House of Representatives.

Like the protagonist Phil in "Groundhog Day," you keep waking up to the same day over and over again.

As Phil (played by Bill Murray) remarked, "Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today."

Or as one wag remarked about the cost of the election, "We spent $3 billion for this?"

Apparently, gridlock doesn't come cheap. Actually, the $3 billion figure is just for the presidential election - we spent much more than that to achieve stasis in Congress.

Both sides of the aisle in Congress immediately announced their positions on reducing the deficit and confronting the national debt haven't changed. What a surprise.

It certainly doesn't look like bipartisanship is a ship that will be sailing soon. Our politicians apparently are much more comfortable on this Titanic the country is cruising on.

And why not? We keep giving them their jobs back.
